Welcome to Avarta's first-ever weekly gaming news round up.This particular round up focuses on arguably the most exciting aspect of Web3. Good old-fashioned gaming (reimagined on the blockchain and with a play-to-earn model that puts money back into your hands instead of centralized gaming companies of course).
Over the past week, many companies have partnered up to bring new, exciting blockchain gaming projects that take advantage of each company's strengths while also tapping into their built audiences.
GRIT, a battle royal game, is to launch on Epic Games Store - this is the first blockchain-based game ever to be featured on the massive, mainstream gaming marketplace.
National Football League has partnered with Mythical Games, and Block Games partnered with Estoty to pool their resources and create blockchain-based games. Revoland raises $10.6M for its blockchain-based multiplayer online battle arena game, and Ni No Kuni: Cross Worlds launches.
This week's blockchain gaming news update will cover all of that and more.
One of the largest and most popular marketplaces for PC games, Epic Games Store, will be receiving its first Web3 game with Gala Games' GRIT, a Wild West-themed battle royale game.
GRIT is a free-to-play online multiplayer game featuring user-owned NFT assets that can be bought, sold, and used within the game.
The gameplay style mirrors the popular Fortnite formula that has been incredibly popular in the past few years. Players are dropped into a large area and partake in a free-for-all battle. However, unlike Fortnite, GRIT has a unique Western aesthetic.
GRIT will be released later in the year and will run on Epic Games' own Unreal Engine.
NFL Players Association (NFLPA) and Mythical Games have teamed up to create a blockchain-based game to launch in 2023. The game, known as NFL Rivals, has players take on the role of team manager while also emphasizing the collecting and owning of NFTs.
Mythical Games takes a different approach than other blockchain games, taking on the play-and-own model instead of the play-to-earn model. The game will also offer its players new ways to engage with their favourite teams and players both in-game and real life.
Before the game's launch, there will be 32 collections of 3D NFL-themed NFTs dropped. These NFTs double as vouchers that provide access to special events and have in-game utility.
Revoland, a blockchain-based multiplayer online battle arena game, has raised its seed and pre-sale rounds.
The $10.6 million fundraise was led by HashKey Capital and Polygon Ventures, with help from 14 other digital asset venture capital firms.
Revoland allows players to join forces with friends and family to create a team and earn token rewards through the game's play-to-earn model. The gameplay relies on player skill and teamwork, offering various game modes and a ranking system that rewards players.
The platform will create a Web3-powered community, enabling players to explore the game deeper and spend its native token, $LAND, to access additional characters and upgrades.
Block Game, game development and publishing studio, has partnered with Estoty, a mobile game studio, to create a series of player-owned mobile games, starting with Shatterpoint.
Shatterpoint is a roleplaying action game developed for mobile. The game took on a free-to-play model and was designed to educate players about the blockchain space, rewarding them with NFTs.
This partnership and the games that will spawn from it emphasize blockchain education and will work as a bridge into the Web3 world for players new to the space.
With Estoty's catalogue of games having 1.5 billion downloads and over 200 million active users, this set of games will reach a new audience and bolster the space's userbase immensely.
Ni No Kuni, a long-standing game series from Level 5 and Studio Ghibli, has created another entry into the series. The new entry, Ni No Kuni: Cross Worlds, is a blockchain-based game with upcoming NFT features.
Ni No Kuni: Cross Worlds enables players to earn digital assets as they play. The digital assets are Asterite tokens and can be earned weekly by earning a high rank in the game's PvP mode and Territe Tokens, which can be earned through PvE activities.
NFT integration is scheduled for later this year, though what form these will take is not yet clear.
That wraps up this Avarta’s first-ever weekly gaming news update.
